Viscosity and Additive Considerations

Additives enhance lubricant performance and provides benefits which base fluids alone cannot. Typical additives found in lubricating fluids include:

Detergents Antifoam Agents Dispersants
Rust Inhibitors Oxidation Inhibitors Corrosion Inhibitors
  Viscosity Improvers

What are Lubricant Test Methods and what do they show us?

Noack Volatility (DIN 51581)

Noack volatility testing measures the volatility of a lubricant at 250 C for a one hour period.

Determination of volatility characteristics provides a basis for estimating the approximate useful life or relubrication interval of a lubricant.

Mineral oil-based lubricants have volatility characteristics ranging from   10 - 25 %.

Synthetic Lubricants have volatility characteristics ranging from 1-10%.

AMSOIL lubricants typically range from 2-6%.

Oil Degradation

Oil in service is chemically and physically contaminated depending on the length of service and the conditions imposed on it by its application.

Changes occur during the lubricants service life due to exposure to particulate (dirt) accumulation, heat, oxygen, the formation of acids, and catalytic effects caused by contact with metals in the application.

Oxidation, due to high temperatures and extended service, will tend to darken the color of the oil, increase its viscosity, and make it take on an odor.  Insoluble resins will ultimately be formed and become deposits.   The chemical structure of the oil will change gradually turning to organic acids which are corrosive and harmful to the equipment.

Although additives will retard the chemical changes, the changes will occur as the additives are depleted.
